Under the transdisciplinary theme ‘Where We Are in Place and Time,’ our PYP 4 learners participated in a meaningful session led by Ms. Nisha Kumari, the student counsellor, PYP, focusing on Building Resilience – Learning to Bounce Back. This collaboration aimed to explore how resilience helps individuals adapt to and recover from challenges over time.
The session introduced the concept of resilience, helping students understand how people can overcome adversity. Through content-rich discussions, real-life examples like Japan’s recovery from natural disasters, New Orleans' resilience post-Hurricane Katrina, and personal stories of figures such as Albert Einstein and J.K. Rowling, students delved into how resilience plays a crucial role in confronting and recovering from life’s challenges, especially during natural disasters. Thought-provoking videos further illustrated these ideas, helping learners connect the concept of resilience to real-world scenarios along with their daily life hurdles/ challenges.
In addition, the session encouraged students to reflect on resilience within the context of their own learning journeys. They considered how this trait plays a role in overcoming academic or personal setbacks, and how developing resilience can empower them to face future difficulties. Engaging in self-reflection, students discussed their personal challenges, such as confronting fears or handling difficult situations like floods, and how resilience can help them rise above these moments.
By the end of the session, students eagerly shared personal stories of times when they had given up in the past, but with newfound understanding, they expressed motivation to try again and never giving up. The session not only deepened their understanding of resilience but also reignited their determination to face challenges head-on, reinforcing a ‘never give up’ mindset in our young learners.
