When we were first introduced to the concept of World Scholars Cup, I was unsure how I was going to be able to accommodate practicing for such an event while maintaining efforts in regular schoolwork. However, I was determined to enhance both my confidence and overall skills. We began by creating teams of three to participate in the regional round of the competition. I, alongside two f my peers took upon the challenge of creating research documents on each of the topics in the provided syllabus. We each completed detailed documents of the syllabus and went on to compete in the competition. I also took interest in the Scholar’s Show and sang a song in the show. It was a nostalgic experience as it was a first experience of a performance in front of a large audience.
We placed 3rd overall as a team and went on forward to the global round in Bangkok on August 23rd onwards. We explored multiple socializing events such as scavenger hunts and dinners which acted like ice breakers for the event. We competed in the main events, that is Team Debate, Collaborative Writing, Scholar’s Challenge, and Scholar’s Bowl. I was selected to be the showstopper in the Scholar’s Show. This time, with more confidence in my audition and performance. I was also more open to trying a new genre on stage. Again, we as a team succeeded in qualifying for the final round ’Tournament of Champions’ at Yale University.
Unfortunately, most of the qualified scholars from our school did not go to the final stage of the event, which included my teammates. Due to these reasons, two students from MYP 3 joined me and we teamed up to go forward into this voyage. It was a long journey which included remaking our notes and making them even more detailed than before. Eventually, we had been able to complete our notes on a compiled document. We were posed with another challenge of studying a completely new syllabus about 8-9 days before the event at Yale. Again, we immediately got to work and divided the topics of research. It was hard finding detailed sources for so many topics in such less time, however we managed to complete it with the support of the original resources and some online articles.
Soon, it was time to compete at the final round of the World Scholar’s cup. The experience of living inside the yale city itself was an unimaginable experience and understanding the real situation of being in college while interacting with students from the university and observing the knowledge written on its very walls and it motivated me to believe in myself and have confidence during all the events. Though we did face multiple challenges as a team, which included bias and racism, we as a team were able to get through it. I realized that it was not something that should bother me, instead, I should focus on my performance and performance as a team. Soon, we were dancing at the ball in the Concert Street Music Hall. We enjoyed celebrating the end of all academic events in the journey. We had an incredibly fun night; however, it was finally time for the award ceremony and Scholar’s Show. I was once more the showstopper at the event where I sang a song of yet another genre. We each received multiple medals. Overall, it was an indescribable experience which I made many memories and new learnings from.
