Election season is around the corner, an important event awaited by the citizens of India every 5 years. The elections are of utmost importance and concern all the citizens of the country. With this in mind, I conducted a session on Friday (5th April) with the students of MYP 3 in hopes of making them more aware citizens of our country.
Engaging with young students about the importance of elections and the significance of voting was an enlightening experience that enabled me to impart my knowledge of the general elections to the young students of MYP 3. As I stood before the eager faces of these young minds, I felt a profound sense of responsibility to convey the gravity of their future involvement in the democratic process especially since they would be exercising their right to vote in the next 5 years which is the next election season (2029).
One of the most rewarding aspects of the session was witnessing the students' curiosity and enthusiasm. Their questions reflected a genuine desire to comprehend the intricacies of our government system and how it functions. Through the session, I explained the students about the fundamentals of elections, ranging from type of elections to voting process and showed them why it is important to be politically aware in an engaging way. By delving into the various types of elections, such as general and executive elections, I aimed to broaden students understanding of elections.
I also explained them the importance of voting since government influences our decisions to a great extent. I gave students relatable examples such as TikTok and Amazon and how government was responsible for its ban in India and China respectively. Through these examples I was able to make students critically think about the real-life examples around them and established importance of electing candidates.
Throughout the session, I endeavoured to foster critical thinking skills by presenting real-world examples and engaging in interactive discussions. In order to connect with my target audience consisting of young students, I tried simplifying concepts such as democracy and representation, I tried doing this by making the subject matter relatable and understandable to young minds. Witnessing the students connect the dots between theoretical knowledge and real-world examples was immensely gratifying and reaffirmed the importance of such learning in our education system.
Reflecting on the experience, I am reminded of the profound impact that education can have on shaping young students to be informed citizens of our country. Through the session I was able to help the MYP 3 students to gain interest in a rather complex topic such as politics. Moving forward, I am inspired to continue fostering a culture of civic engagement and instilling in young minds the belief that their voices matter and their actions can effect meaningful change in society thus fostering future leaders.
