The 15th of August marks more than just a date on the calendar. It commemorates India’s freedom from British rule and accolades the courage and sacrifices of our nation’s valiant soldiers, freedom fighters, and citizens.
On the 14th of August 2024, at Pathways School Gurgaon, we gathered to celebrate India’s 78th Independence Day. Our morning yawns were awakened by PSG’s second-ever student March Past, led by Adhiveer Kapuria and the DP/CP, MYP, and PYP student councils, who marched in unity, depicting the solidarity of our motherland. Further, Captain Bajaj tributed the Indian tricolor, as the choir, alongside the students, stood to sing the National Anthem. As we progressed through the assembly, we were addressed by astounding speeches that resonated the greatness of our nation and the army that protects us.
Aligned with the spirit of patriotism, I was reminded of the sacrifices and services of my own family. My great-grandfather, General SM Shrinagesh, the first-ever Indian Chief of Army Staff – the highest serving position of the Indian Army – after Independence, and my grandfather, Satish Shrinagesh, who was awarded the Indian Sword of Honor –. Growing up in a family with significant roots in the Indian army, while also being a Pathways School Student, I was taught discipline, sacrifice, and hard work, three critical traits portrayed by the heroes of 1947, who brought our nation freedom, and with it, immense pride.
Today, the celebration reminded me of this pride, nationalism, and most-of-all, gratitude to those who laid down their lives, fighting for our justice. The melodies of patriotic songs reverberated around the amphitheater, sending chills down spines. Meanwhile, the breath-taking dance performances instilled a message, dedicated to the principles of democracy and the constitution, honoring our legacy, and fostering unity, progress, and – as emphasized by Captain Bajaj – “human flourishing”.
All-in-all, today’s assembly emitted a distinct sense of unity and dignity for our culture, history, heritage, and the national devotion of our ancestors. We celebrated not only timeless efforts of our soldiers and freedom fighters, but also the development that our great nation has undergone since Independence. Today, we all stood, proud as one community, one country, to acknowledge our legacy, values, and spirit in freedom.
